America’s Healthy Food Financing Initiative: Partnerships Program

Grant amount: Up to a total of $30,000,000 is available. Grants to applicants will range from $200,000 to $3,000,000 depending on the type of activities proposed.

America’s Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI), a program administered by Reinvestment Fund on behalf of USDA Rural Development, works to improve access to fresh, healthy foods in underserved rural and urban areas. HFFI’s new Local and Regional Healthy Food Financing Partnerships Program will support public-private partnerships to establish and grow local, regional, or state food financing programs that provide financial and technical assistance to healthy food retailers (grocery and other markets) and food enterprises (food retail supply chain businesses).

Grants will provide support for operating expenses (capacity building activities) and to help deploy loans and other financial assistance (credit enhancement activities). Eligible applicants include regional, state, or local public-private partnerships of two or more entities that are organized to improve access to fresh, healthy foods and provide financial and technical assistance to eligible projects.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation

Geographic scope: North Carolina

Grant amount: Up to $100,000 per year for three years

Through the Strengthening Community Capacity to Advocate for Healthy Food funding opportunity, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation seeks to support community-based organizations in North Carolina in expanding their ability to advocate for policy and systems change aimed at increasing access to healthy food for those most impacted by food insecurity.

In total, $4.2 million will be allocated to support up to 14 organizations over three years to enhance their ability to affect the policy and systemic changes needed to address the root causes of food insecurity for those most impacted in their communities. Eligible organizations must serve communities and populations impacted by high rates of food insecurity and lack of access to healthy food, have specific policy or systems change priorities to address food insecurity and break down barriers to healthy food, and be deeply connected to the community they serve.

Department of Agriculture

The purpose of the Farm to School Technical Assistance Cooperative Agreement is to support nonprofit entities and Indian tribal organizations to implement national- or regional-level farm-to-school activities. Awardees under this cooperative agreement will undertake projects supporting USDA’s priorities of food system transformation, improving child health through nutritious school meals, and Indigenous food sovereignty.

There are three funding tracks available, corresponding with each USDA priority. The Supporting Community Engagement track supports projects that expand farm-to-school institutes. The Supporting Producer Engagement track funds projects that strengthen producer engagement with the child nutrition programs market. Finally, the Supporting Tribal Engagement track will fund an entity to conduct tribal dialogues with the purpose of supporting Food and Nutrition Services’ farm-to-school grantmaking and technical assistance for tribal entities.

The SEG Gives Foundation, the charitable arm of Southeastern Grocers Inc., is now accepting applications from nonprofit organizations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi through the 2023 Romay Davis Belonging, Inclusion and Diversity Grant. Support is provided to nonprofit organizations with missions to elevate underserved communities that are working to address racial disparities in healthcare, food insecurity, and education, while building a more inclusive and equitable future for all.

Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation

Geographic scope: Company communities in the ten states served by Food Lion

The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides support to organizations based in or providing support in the ten states in which Food Lion operates, including locations within a 20-mile radius of a Food Lion store in Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Grants support children at risk of hunger by providing funds to feeding agencies to increase their "fresh" capacity so families can put nutritious meals on their tables. Foundation grants can only be used for the purchase of food in support of an organization's hunger-relief effort.

This initiative seeks community-led, community-focused organizations whose explicit purpose is to advance the voices and opportunities of individuals and families of meager or modest means, and groups who have met with discrimination and other systemic obstacles. Organizations best suited to this initiative will enable individuals and families to achieve substantive improvement in their well-being through foundational resources. This includes, for instance, organizations providing access to health care, stable and affordable housing, education and job training, support for sustained employment, asset ownership, civic engagement, and other pathways. They may also be engaged in data collection and communication to amplify the voices of people and communities struggling against inequities.
Community-led, community-focused nonprofit organizations from across the United States and U.S. Territories are invited to apply and share the impact they have had on the abilities of individuals and families in their communities to achieve substantive improvement in their well-being.
Interested organizations must register to apply before 4 p.m. U.S. Central Time on Friday, May 5, 2023. Complete applications are due before 4 p.m. U.S. Central Time on Monday, June 12, 2023. Organizations must have an annual operating budget of at least $1 million and no more than $5 million for at least two of the last four fiscal years to be eligible to apply.

Frances Hollis Brain Foundation Fund

Inspired by the lifetime legacy of giving of David and Frances Brain, the Frances Hollis Brain Foundation Fund at the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta supports nonprofit organizations and projects that serve disadvantaged, underserved, and/or vulnerable communities. The Fund addresses primary needs – food, shelter and healthcare– of individuals and families living in Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties. Local Food Promotion Program

The Local Food Promotion Program supports projects that develop, coordinate, and expand local and regional food business enterprises that engage as intermediaries in indirect producer-to-consumer marketing to help increase access to and availability of locally and regionally produced agricultural products. The program focuses on supporting the processing, aggregation, distribution, and storage of local and regional food products that are marketed locally or regionally, including value-added agricultural products; encouraging the development of value-added agricultural products; assisting with business development plans and feasibility studies; developing marketing strategies for producers of local food products and value-added agricultural products in new and existing markets; facilitating regional food chain coordination and mid-tier value chain development; promoting new business opportunities and marketing strategies to reduce on-farm food waste; responding to changing technology needs in indirect producer-to-consumer marketing; and covering expenses related to costs incurred in obtaining food safety certification and improvements to food safety practices and equipment.

Food and Agriculture Service Learning Program

The purpose of the Food and Agriculture Service Learning Program is to increase the knowledge of agricultural science and improve the nutritional health of children. The Program supports projects that bring together stakeholders from the distinct parts of the food system to increase the capacity for food, garden, and nutrition education within host organizations or entities, such as school cafeterias and classrooms, while fostering higher levels of community engagement between farms and school systems. The mission of CREATE ACTION is to amplify the efforts of local organizations through funding, storytelling, and collaboration with Sony. CREATE ACTION grants support organizations in the United States and Canada serving their local communities in areas such as STEAM/academic enrichment, workforce development, and nonprofit services for underserved and under-represented groups. One grant will be awarded each month through March 2023. Grantees will receive a $50,000 USD grant to continue and expand the organization's work, $50,000 USD in Sony electronics products to support their mission, and a Sony-produced short film telling the organization's story. Nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status in the U.S. (excluding territories) and provincially and federally incorporated nonprofit organizations in Canada (excluding Quebec) who have received no more than $500,000 USD in annual donations per year for 2020 and 2021 are eligible to participate. Rural Health Network Development Program

The Rural Health Network Development Program supports integrated healthcare networks that collaborate to achieve efficiencies; expand access to, coordinate, and improve the quality of basic healthcare services and associated health outcomes; and strengthen the rural healthcare system as a whole. Program areas include improving access by addressing gaps in care, workforce shortages, and better workflows; expanding capacity and services by creating effective systems through the development of knowledge, skills, structures, and leadership models; enhancing outcomes by expanding or strengthening the network's services, activities, or interventions; and increasing sustainability through value-based care and population health management. Panera Bread Foundation

The Panera Bread Foundation's mission is to support and strengthen communities by investing in underserved and at-risk children and youth to become leaders. The Foundation awards grants to nonprofit organizations in the U.S. who provide access to programs for at-risk, underserved, or historically underrepresented children and youth. (Part of the services provided must be within 25 miles of a Panera U.S. location.) Qualified organizations are 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving predominantly children and youth of color, ages 10-18, that have a new or existing program focused on college readiness, skills building, workforce or leadership development, post-high school planning, or mentorship. Eligible organizations can apply for grants between $25,000 and $150,000. The application deadline is November 14, 2022. Visit the Panera Bread website for more information on the Foundation and apply online to submit a grant application. In addition, Panera's Day-End Dough-Nation program donates unsold bread, bagels, and baked goods from Panera's bakery-cafes to local nonprofit organizations, public schools, and religious organizations. Applicants must distribute the donated products to people in need, people who are ill, or to underserved and at-risk children and youth and must commit to picking up and distributing the donations on a weekly and continuous basis. Organizations who are interested in the program can apply online. Panera's Donation Team will respond to all applicants.

Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation (Rolling)

The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation provides support in the communities served by Dominion Energy, including areas within Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Grant funding is provided to nonprofit organizations with proposals in the following four focus areas: 1) human needs, including food security, housing and shelter, and access to healthcare; 2) environmental stewardship, with a focus on protecting natural resources and making efficient use of energy; 3) education, with a focus on future workforce, especially in STEM and energy fields; and 4) community vitality grants to foster an appreciation of diversity, revitalize neighborhoods, and ensure a vibrant community and cultural life. Community Food Projects Competitive Grant Program

The primary goals of the Community Food Projects Competitive Grant Program (CFPCGP), Assistance Listing 10.225 are as follows (7 U.S.C. 2034(b)): a. Meet the food needs of low-income individuals through food distribution, community outreach to assist in participation in Federally assisted nutrition programs, or improving access to food as part of a comprehensive service; b. Increase the self-reliance of communities in providing for the food needs of the communities; and c. Promote comprehensive responses to local food access, farm, and nutrition issues; or d. Meet specific state, tribal, local or neighborhood food and agricultural needs including needs relating to: i. Equipment necessary for the efficient operation of a project; planning for longterm solutions; or ii. The creation of innovative marketing activities that mutually benefit agricultural producers and low-income consumers.
